When we talk about branding, one of the basic principles is to get that our brand or logo is present in the greatest number of locations so that the user can remember us and US relations in the future. The faviconis one of the most forgotten items but fulfills a very important work of our presence online, and more today when most browsers work with tabs and you can jump from one another.
What is a favicon and what is on my website?
A favicon in a small image that browsers can show at the top of the tabs, next to the title of the page. This image can be given by us and is also the icon the user will keep should add page to Favorites. Hence the importance of this element, as it is the way that our users will identify us when they are browsing another website and have a tab open with our site.
It is not necessary to be the logo of our company or project, it is possible that it does not come into the square format that they must have the favicons. But can be an original of the blog, a color representative or the version responsive of our logo.
Add a favicon to WordPress.org
The first thing is to identify if you are WordPress.org or WordPress.com. This article will be of help to verify that are using.
We will begin by WordPress.org. Since version 4.3 WordPress incorporates a feature called icon of the site, which allows us to upload an image in square format and dimensions minimum 512 pixels of width and height so that it will act as a favicon.
For power it raise need go to the panel of customize. From our panel of administration of WordPress go to the menu’s appearance > customize > identity of the site > icon from the site
This is very useful, because from an image png created with a editor of images can get the favicon necessary for them different browsers without worry about us by uploading several images of different format and dimensions.
Add a favicon to WordPress.com
The process on WordPress.com is slightly different. Here it functionality of called Blavatars, and works of the same form, we can add our image in format .png or .jpg to act as favicon. No minimum or maximum dimension does not require us, but they recommend a minimum of 128 pixels of width and height.
To make use of the functionality of blavatars, will have that access to our panel of administration. To do this simply with add / wp-admin behind our domain, for example miblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin.
A time inside, navigate to settings > General > image / icon of the site. We will find a space to upload our image and replace the logo of WordPress which appears in the browser by our own favicon.
Keep in mind that the change may take a few hours, due to the cache that uses WordPress.com to your network of blogs.
Goodbye to create manually the favicon.ico
Before this process was much more complex. Would that create a tag in the head of the web, upload the image in format .ico, create several sizes for according to what browsers… a process that is has simplified much with them two features of which have spoken previously.
If you are interested to know the process and as the authors of themes we had to include it as a basic of our templates (with its corresponding loss when the user changed theme) you can read this post in the WordPress Codex.
